UK Reduced Overseas Aid But Still Donate Well

The UK Reduced Overseas Aid in 2021 But Still Donate Well Overall

The UK announced a temporary reduction in the overseas aid budget from 0.7% to 0.5% in Nov 2020, due to the economic impact of the COVID-19 pandemic.

In 2020 the UK was 1 of only 7 countries who still met the 0.7% of GNI oversea aid target.

In 2021 only five countries Denmark, Germany, Luxembourg, Norway, and Sweden met the 0.7% of GNI target.

It was the first year since 2013, that the UK didn't reach the ODA target of 0.7% of GNI. The UK slipped into ninth place with an ODA of 0.5% of GNI.

I was unhappy that the UK Gov reduced overseas aid.

However the UK kick-started COVAX in 2020 and is one of the largest donors to COVAX, helping roll out the COVID vaccination to other countries to help beat the pandemic, like the Philippines, Antigua and Barbuda, Belize, Cambodia, Guyana, Indonesia, Jamaica, Kenya, Laos, Malaysia, Philippines, Saint Vincent and the Grenadines, Thailand and Vietnam.

"Over half a billion doses of the Oxford-AstraZeneca vaccine have been delivered at a non-profit price globally, with two-thirds going to lower and middle-income countries." - Gov

Measuring a country's fortune or success is subjective and depends on various factors such as individual perspectives, values, and priorities, and can also vary depending on the context and criteria used for comparison.

But, no matter how many charts or how much data we consider, contrast and compare, the UK falls as a fairly wealthy nation-state.

The HDI lists the 33 most developed countries and the UK is 13th.

The World Bank classifies Nation-state economies by income group; low, low-middle, upper-middle and high. The UK is high income.

The IMF 2021 listed countries by their GDP - US is first, then China, Japan, Germany and UK is fifth.

So dispite the bad press the UK still donate well to overseas aid.

A comparison of some countries and foreign aid donated in % of GNI

World Bank 2021

Income Categories around the world

Foreign Aid Total Spending 2021 - Some Countries

Foreign Aid as % of GNI 2021 - Some Countries

IF YOU LOOK CLOSELY AT THESE LAST TWO

The US gives the most $ which is kind of expected given its a United States of many Nations. However if you look at the US foreign aid as % of GNI it is only 0.18%.

Compare with the UK who are in forth place in the $ of foreign aid given and ninth place with 0.5% of GNI foreign aid given.
