'10 Point Plan to Cut Oil Use

Published March 2022.

About this report

In the face of the emerging global energy crisis triggered by Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, the IEA’s 10-Point Plan to Cut Oil Use proposes 10 actions that can be taken to reduce oil demand with immediate impact – and provides recommendations for how those actions can help pave the way to putting oil demand onto a more sustainable path in the longer term.

UK Government could immediately set motorway speed limits for all vehicles to adhere to the current speed limits of HGV vehicles. Enabling the majority of vehicles to drive affectively and efficently reaching there vehicles optimal levels of mpg.

The idea of reducing speed limit by 10km/h on highways has been researched and found to be far more effective when it's the vehicle that does the driving, like up to 12% more efficent, however when it's us humans who is pushing the peddle it's been found to only to be 2-3% more efficent.

So, it appears 55mph is a good speed for the majority of vehicles to drive at where they are using energy efficently.

This needs to be clarified for the various types of vehicles cars, vans, LGV and HGV's, then simply speed restrictors can be applied to ensure all vehicles drive only to an optimal speed that reduces energy consumption by preventing vehicles going too fast which typically uses more fuel.

UK Gov run climate awareness campaigns to help educate all drivers to:

USE CRUISE CONTROL

REDUCE AIR CONDITIONING BY 1-2°C

CHECK TYRES ARE CORRECTLY INFLATED

AVOID IDLING BY SWITCHING OFF ENGINE

PLAN TRIPS

SHARE TRIPS & SHARE TIPS! HALVE YOUR DRIVING COST BY TAKING TURNS ONCE OR TWICE A WEEK WIN WIN

UK Government could immediately redo this:

'National Highways Urges drivers to use the two-second rule in New campaign

[Online] www.gov.uk

But go a step or two further!

Scrap the two second rule and instead introduce a 4 or 5 second rule. Make vehicles drive much further apart this reduces the need for unnecessary braking.

The Department of Transport DofT

 reports that

'The DofT report also estimates that the economic cost of all accidents amounts to £36 billion per annum.'

By making it law to keep back 4-5 seconds from the vehicle in front could potentially save the UK Gov and economy up to £36 billion per annum and prevent this kind of human cost reported by DofT in their September 2017 report:

  • Kills - 1,792
  • Serious injury - 24,101
  • Kills/serious injury (KSI) - 25,893
  • Slightly injured - 155,491
  • All casualties - 181,384

Missing from the 10 Point Plan

BAN GAS GUSSLERS !!!

Why is the UK Gov still allowing vehicles to enter the market place when they only get 25mpg?

Why is the UK Gov not encouraging motorists to buy vehicles that are 50-60mpg? They could place monetary incentives in place to encourage and similarly to discourage gas GUSSLERS add massive taxes to prevent motorists wanting to buy them.

Put in place other types of vehicles that are either not reliant upon any fossil fuels or far less reliant on fossil fuels.

Interesting read!

While I mention this, please would someone please explain to me the reason Tesla's do not have a solar powered panels all over them? Or why not incorporate the solar flower project some how?
